To cut wordiness, I remove as much passive voice as possible, making sentences more powerful and direct. I also remove prepositions as much as possible, again making language more direct. I can also improve a paper's flow by writing transitions that link different ideas together, presenting a coherent and well-developed argument. Finally, I use a simple four-step process to analyze subject matter and construct paragraphs. I personally use this method for historical, literary, and rhetorical analysis. This process is easily taught, and once mastered, greatly improves the quality of any given paper.
