I am a CPA licensed in California.
Prior to deploying to Iraq I regularly served businesses in the Real Estate, Retail and Garment industries. I also supported professional providers such as doctors and lawyers. My duties while working at an accounting firm included:
1) Handling all facets of tax return preparation for corporation, partnership, and individual tax returns. 2) Preparing quarterly and annual financial statements. 3) Acting as controller for a client company that generated over $35 million in annual revenue. 4) Establishing and managing accounting systems for client companies. Q. You’re in Iraq. Why are you still working as an accountant?
A. I’m first and foremost a CPA. Going out on missions and assessing the civil services of the Iraqi population is fulfilling, but hard as it is to believe, accounting is in my blood. I miss it terribly.
Q. How do you have the time to answer accounting questions?
A. Military work is very uneven. I have spent continuous 18 hours days working and spent whole days with nothing to do. I currently support the brigade in charge of Ninewa (Mosul), Iraq by assessing the status of civil services.
