My Expert Service

I am completing my Master's degree in mathematics at Queens College of the City University of New York after completing 2 BAs in philosophy and chemistry (long story).I'm hoping to obtain my PHD from either Columbia or Princeton University in pure mathematics. My interests are algebra(linear and abstract),topology, additive number theory and the applications of mathematics to the physical sciences.I've studied under both Melvyn Nathanson and Dennis Sullivan.I've always loved teaching and firmly believe it's part of the job description of any scientist.I very much enjoy tutoring calculus at all levels, although it's not my area of expertise.Sadly, many scientists don't agree. I give explaining the deepest of mathematical concepts my highest priority. A lot of people make mathematics a lot harder then it really is. The core of teaching mathematics is to 1) Define everything clearly and to show how all the methods build from those clear definitions and 2)To see foremost what the learner isn't seeing.Once both hurdles are passed, the material becomes shockingly atraightforward,as mathematics builds vertically. The beauty of mathematics is that it can usually be presented in several equivalent ways-and not all of them will be the best way for each individual to learn it. Of course, education is a partnership between the teacher and the student. The best teacher in creation can't make an unwilling student learn. The teacher CAN attempt to encourage the student to learn it by making it interesting and fun. This is what I try to do-especially in the early going, when the learning of the fundamentals is so important for subsequent learning. The initial learning of concepts is so important for laying the foundation of more difficult ones later. I also assign problems,as math is not a spectator sport. It cannot be learned by osmosis,it must be worked over to encourage true understanding.

Experience & Qualifications

I have private tutored for nearly 10 years in chemistry and mathematics at a variety of colleges, including City College and St.John's University.I also have reviewed mathematics textbooks at a variety of levels for the Mathematical Association of America Online for over 3 years.
