Experience & Qualifications

My last indepth training may have been the most influential that I have received (certificate in christian counseling 2001-2002); but don't worry I did not become judgemental of anyone in anyway,as a matter of fact i learned how to diagnose the problem with out passing judgement on the person and that many problems have specific spiritual components as is highlighted in the traditional 12 Step Programs that I have personal as well as professional experience with. In 1991 I was hired to work in the Children's Services Department of a local county mental health center where I did individual, family and play therapy, in depth diagnostics and child custody evaluations.Over the last years I have become more convinced that the "child is the father of the man".I have also become much more aware of how children of divorce and dysfunctional families are traumatized by these situations. Also I have developed a new understanding of sexual childhood molestation and how to treat it. In 1989 I signed on to work with court referred sex offenders and domestic violence cases. It was continually brought to my attention that victims become perpetrators and how much that needs to be focused on for successful psychotherapeutic relationships between therapist/counselor and patient/client to take place. For 3 years before that I worked parttime in 3 crisis residential dual diagnosis (addiction and mental illness)facilities. Learning upclose and personal how these intertwined was an invaluable experience. Around the same time I was an outpatient therapist in a community mental health center where I received supervision of incalculable value to me. My supervisor believed that the RELATIONSHIP was the ACTIVE INGREDIENT in helping people get well, and I have carried that thru out my work since. For a period I worked as an intern marriage, family and child counselor so I have experience in marriage and family counseling. .Prior to that in 1983 I did an internship in a Child Guidance Clinic which is relevant here in that I learned to understand the problems that people have are so often the product of discouragement in childhood. And that therefore the therapeutic relationship must include encouragement. Prior to that I worked for a period as a behavioral instructor with nutrisystems and I was fascinated to learn how obesity or just the perception of being obese forms a person's perception of their entire self. In 1981 I carried a full caseload of diverse individuals and groups for diagnostic as well as therapeutic services in a college counseling center. Surprisingly I found that I enjoyed and have a nack for career counseling. Also from 1979 to 1981 I had practical experience fellowships in which I learned a myriad of approaches to dealing with mental and emotional health problems. What really sticks out to me from this period of time is the need to balance the gathering of information from the patient/client along with offerring support sometimes during periods of crisis and the building of a trusting relationship that goes bothways. Prior to that I worked as the director of a women's studies center at which time I became acquainted with the gay and lesbian, bisexual and transgender community on campus and some of their struggles in building and rebuilding trusting relationships with those around them.1977-1978 I held assistantships that allowed me to teach classes to undergraduates in the Psychology Department. In 1975 I did an intership at a Federal Bureau of Prisons Correctional Institution, which was a medium security facility in the drug and alcohol unit, and in 1974 I did an internship with the juvenile delinquincy unit of the police department in the city where I was doing my undergraduate degree and also volunteered to work on a crisis suicide prevention hotline. I started my practical experience at vocational rehabilitation center. I hope this has helped you to get to know me better. If you choose to avail yourself of my services please rat
