My Expert Service
|
I stress practical writing experience on familiar topics, systematic peer review and rigorous self-editing and revision. The groups I work with gain a greater sense of cohesion from my seminars, and return to work as more productive writers no longer hamstrung by the seemingly endless "rewrite cycle." I view writing -- whether for emails or in public presentations -- as an opportunity to be creative and crystallize our thinking. And therein lies the value of writing training as a powerful management tool.
My students learn to:
•Improve communications, both external and internal, to portray a consistently professional image of their organization.
•Treat email as writing that leaves a lasting impression. Too often, it looks like a casual conversation, with little or no attempt at editing for content and style.
•Pay careful attention to the needs of varied readers. In other words: The audience comes first.
•Use concise language that shuns jargon and bureaucratic padding.
•Follow language conventions (a polite phrase for grammar) that can be standardized across the workplace, without stifling the writer's voice.

Experience & Qualifications

|
I have 30 years in journalism (Kansas City Star and Pentagon coverage for Business Week magazine) and journalism education (Penn State faculty). More recently, I have been running a Writing Process seminar for teachers seeking recertification, and teaching writing courses for federal employees from Atlanta up to New England. I have also worked on writing with engineers and scientists at the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Newport, RI, support staff at Bates College in Maine, and reporters and editors at two daily newspapers in Maine. Soon, I will host a writing seminar for a large HMO in Connecticut.
