Hi there,
My name is Maria, and as is mentioned in the short description, I am passionate about the sciences! I enjoy being able to explain tough concepts in a way that both kids and adults understand.
I have a bachelor’s degree is in Psychology and PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology in the biomedical sciences. In graduate school, I conducted research on the development and progression of atherosclerosis, known to lead to heart disease. I have years of experience working with lipids (fats), using a variety of chromatography (HPLC, LC, GC, TLC, SPE) and mass spectrometry (ESI-tandem MS, GC-MS, GC-FID, LC-MS) instruments. Following graduation, I completed a post-doctoral fellowship at cancer institute, where I conducted research on pancreatic cancer. Along the way, I studied in a neurobiology lab, a Herpes virology lab, and diabetes lab. After so many years learning about chronic diseases led me to investigate on my own how proper nutrition can prevent and in some cases reverse the development of those diseases.
I now teach high school Chemistry, Biology, Physical Sciences, and Philosophy at a bilingual school in Honduras. I also volunteer at the local Public Health Clinic where I’m working on launching a health education program for adolescents. Topics include sex education, nutrition, self-esteem (psychology), hygienic practices, and spirituality.

I have always enjoyed mastering new fields and discovering how the world works. I can offer my knowledge via education/tutoring and project planning/execution. In addition to a wide knowledge base, I have published many peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and written grants. I know how to relay information to research scientists and clinicians, and to kids. My goal is to help you reach your goal. If your goal is to get excellent grades, I will explain to you the big picture, followed by the specifics. I will work with you until you arrive at the “ah-ha” moment. Once you understand why, high marks come easy. I work with ESL students and can provide help in English as well.
Additionally, I can provide help organizing your project, proof-reading, and brainstorming.
I am highly creative and artistic, which comes through in my teaching methods and ability to solve problems. I look forward to serving you.
