I hold a Bachelor’s degree in biology, and a Ph.D. in psychology. For the past 15 years I have studied and taught about how the chemistry and anatomy of the brain control behavior. Early in my career, I was primarily interested in the pharmacological control of emotion and emotional disorders and how emotionality affects memory and learning. Over time my interests shifted into the study of drugs of abuse. In more recent years I have begun to focus my studies and teaching, on the treatment and prevention of substance abuse. Interestingly, all of those things that I studied early in my career (e.g. emotionality, motivation, memory, learning, and the physiology of the brain) pertain not only to substance abuse and its treatment, but to the control of all compulsive behavior, including over eating. I teach at the university level. I teach courses in health psychology, biopsychology, psychopharmacology, research methods, and statistics. I am also an active researcher.
