My Expert Service

Hi, I'm Laura Nolan. Until LivePerson turns out a Mac version of the Expert Messenger, I can be reached at the YIM screen-name above. Yahoo IM accepts Gmail, Hotmail, and MSN addresses, so please feel free to drop me a line! Just include a message that you're contacting me from LivePerson. :)

I'm one of those generally all-around creative people that always seem to come at things from an unexpected direction. I will always provide you with a detailed, step-by-step answer to your question, as well as external sources for your later use and further exploration into the wonderful world of home crafting. While my degree is in Voice Performance (opera, actually), I never could restrain myself to one creative field. My crafting experience ranges from stamping & scrap-booking to full costuming and alterations, with plenty of knitting, crochet, cross-stitch, and other thread-craft along the way. I type 70wpm, please do not fear you will be overcharged due to poor typing skills during chat sessions! If research is required, I will ALWAYS provide you with the resources I used to answer your question. Experience & Qualifications

Where crafting goes, I'm largely self-taught, but as I would far rather make something than buy it, that book-learning goes farther than you'd think!

Crocheted purses, blankets and clothes for baby, accessories, and other such projects are high on my list of rainy-day activities, as the smaller items can be finished in a few hours, while larger ones can easily fill many a long winter evening. I find crochet much easier and faster than knitting, though that’s a personal preference! That way too low-cut dress that is otherwise perfect? A small hook, a spool of Aunt Lydia’s, about 2 hours to kill, and it’s problem solved by a lovely hand-made lace insert that can be permanently stitched in, or just tacked in with Velcro for versatility. Emergency birthday or holiday gifts? A large hook and a skein of pretty yarn can turn out a purse, a set of coasters or doilies, or a hat or scarf in very short order. Or if you’re like me and get regularly snowed in every winter, there are even afghan hooks specifically made for creating those marvelously cozy throws and blankets everyone loves to wrap up in by the fireplace with a good book on a stormy night.

Cross-stitch and needlepoint have fascinated me since childhood. Though I learned at my grandmother’s knee, like most kids these days, I didn’t really get into it until I was in 10th grade or so, but after that I took right off into the great unknown! Needlecraft offers an immense range of projects and difficulties, ranging from the quick and easy to the complicated and time-consuming. A plain bib or romper becomes a thoughtful and treasured baby shower gift with a little waste canvas and a design kit from any craft store, while the truly ambitious can even design their own wall art and tapestries!

Friendship bracelets of wide-ranging designs and patterns are a special favorite of mine, and a great craft for children, never mind those leftover lengths of embroidery floss from your last needlepoint project! Tassels, flowers, and other accents are also simple and fun ways to use up those lingering bits of thread or yarn that any crafter is loathe to throw away.

Toys… the Lonely Sock Club is a great place to find volunteers for sock monkeys, hand puppets, embroidered Christmas stockings, and much much more. Old nylons can become fairy wings or stuffed toys with no previous experience needed! Paper airplanes are obvious, but what about a leaping paper frog or grasshopper?

Speaking of paper crafts, the possibilities for fun with the kids are endless. Chains made from colored papers make quick and easy holiday decorations, while stamps and ink can be turned to home-made greeting cards or scrap-book accents. Paper-maché is a fabulous creative outlet for young and old… just be sure to put down newspaper on your table first! But ah, scrap-booking… the tools of the trade abound in any craft store in the world. Fancy scissors, paper punches with corner treatments or cut-out symbols, special inks in every color imaginable, never mind the metallics! Stickers, both flat and fuzzy, acid-free papers with patterns and themes, even binding tools for those ambitious few unsatisfied by premade books.

As for outright sewing, I can’t get enough. The idea that one can take a length of cloth and turn it into a dress or a suit still astounds me, even knowing full well how it is done. Alterations are my specialty, as costume-work tends to be mostly about making the existing stock fit this year’s cast of actors! Occasionally I do make clothing from scratch, and know the ins and outs of custom tailoring reasonably well, even if my favorite part is always and forever the wander through the aisles of fabric bolts, touching and gazing and layering, trying this button and that bit of lace. Training the eye is often just as important as learning the sewing machine itself!
