My Expert Service

I've been a writer all my adult life, which, excluding a very, very brief stint in jail and a longer one doing PR for the office furniture industry, has comprised about 40 years. I don't recommend going to jail, nor singing the praises of desks and chairs. And though I love and continue to make a living at journalism, you might want to take a deep breath before taking that route just now. But writing? Despite everything else these days -- writing remains, it lives and breathes and gives life, not just information. The world will not be won by the Twittering masses, but by writers. Good writers. As a newspaperman, I've worked for weeklies (Woodstock NY) and dailies (Middletown (NY) Times Herald-Record, to this day). I've written stories hard and soft and breaking (though that sounds more like something you do at a breakfast griddle rather than at a computer). I've won awards for excellence four times from the New York State Associated Press and one from the New York State Newspaper Publishers Association. I've written columns -- movies, humor, TV, politics -- for all the papers I've ever worked for. And yes, I blog regularly, since blogging at its best is column-writing-without-portfolio. In between everything else, I've freelanced at magazines such as Sports Illustrated and newspapers such as The New York Times and The Miami Herald. I've edited a number of books, have taught feature writing at New York's SUNY New Paltz and have counseled many a young and not-so-young writer over the years. Most of my experience is, as you can see, on the non-fiction front, but I've also written and edited fiction. Don't call on me if you're looking for by-the-book advice. That's what books are for, though I could recommend a few -- a very few -- if you'd like. Call me if you need help with your swing or your stance, or if you want a practiced and sympathetic ear and eye. To continue the sports mataphor, I don't pull my punches, but I've found that for any one who wants to be a better writer, editorial punching is rarely necessary. Encouragement is my specialty, borne of sympathy for the writer's task and a passionate interest in the myriad ways and means of writing. Nobody asked, but here's my favorite saying about the importance and pleasure of writing. E. M. Forster is usually credited with saying it when asked what he thought about something. "How can I tell what I think until I see what I say?" Give me a call. In the words of another, though very different writer, rock 'n'roller Billy Swan, "I Can Help."
