Robert Smith has a passion for everything in sound, and his unique gift for recording motivated him to move to NYC in the mid 80’s. His first studio home was at Greene Street Recording in SoHo. At Greene Street, his projects ranged from working with an up-and-coming label called Def Jam Recording – and many artists within the Rap world including Run DMC, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Salt N’ Pepa – to classic talents such as Joe Cocker, James Brown, and George Clinton. It was this beginning that solidified Robert’s dream and enabled him to cut his teeth with an amazing roster of talent.
Moving uptown, by request, to the Hit Factory in 1988, Robert’s clientele grew to include music giants from every corner of the globe and across all music genres. He learned from the masters of modern recording, including Tom Lord Alge, Neil Dorfsman and Phil Ramone. These early lessons proved to be invaluable. As Robert’s dexterity continued to evolve, advancement to the highly regarded Power Station in 1992 increased the level of upper echelon projects. Helping him master the art of recording were David Bowie, Rickie Lee Jones, Luther Vandross, David Sanborn, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Lena Horne and Dave Brubeck.
After twenty years and hundreds of recordings, Robert’s sought-after talents expanded into full production and engineering and have brought his major label expertise to all facets of music production at Defy Recordings.
