We offer over 25 years of accessibility experience, serving a wide variety of clientele including business, legal, architectural, and construction firms; as well as governmental organizations of all types and sizes. Our work has included the evaluation of buildings and facilities; the development and implementation of compliance programs for programmatic accessibility, physical accessibility and employment regulations, a variety of award winning renovation and construction projects, as well as award winning product design and development.

Experience & Qualifications

CODE COMPLIANCE SERVICES: Consulting with the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety/Disabled Access Division, I assured compliance with California access regulations; including plan check, technical assistance, training, and analysis of departmental policies. I have provided similar services for other cities. ARCHITECTURE , INTERIOR & PRODUCT DESIGN AWARDS: I have received design awards for accessibility related projects, including: °Design Award, California Preservation Foundation, 1994, for design of an accessible entrance to the Alameda County Courthouse. °Certificate of Achievement, National Endowment for the Arts and the National Building Museum 1996, for Excellence in Universal Design for the JCDecaux Automatic Public Street Toilet. °Design Award, California Preservation Foundation, 1998, for the renovation of McMullen House, a board and care facility for individuals with disabilities. (Partial List) CODE DEVELOPMENT: I provided extensive written comments and met with members of the U. S. Access Board on the development of the ADA Accessibility Guidelines, and was a member of the Regulatory Negotiations Committee of the U. S. Access Board, developing regulations for trails, campgrounds and other outdoor environments. (Partial List) FACILITY SURVEYS AND TRANSITION PLANS: I’ve conducted programmatic, employment and physical accessibility surveys and developed transition plans for public and private entities throughout the country, including: the City of Los Angeles, the City and County of San Francisco, the County of Alameda and the New York Port Authority. (Partial List) ACCESSIBILITY RESEARCH: A study for the California Department of Transportation, documented the level of accessibility provided by complying environments, made modifications to critical dimensional requirements and analyzed facilities to determine how changes affected accessibility. This information was used for a variety of purposes, including the design of new passenger rail vehicles. (Partial List) TRAINING: I taught an eight week design class on accessibility and universal design for Canada College including the ADA Accessibility Guidelines, Fair Housing Act Guidelines, Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards and the California Building Code, to identify regulations that provide the highest level of accessibility. I have conducted over two hundred and fifty training seminars on state and federal laws and regulations. A sample includes: An access seminar for enforcement staff in the San Francisco Building Department. "Litigating Disability Rights Cases" for the State Bar of California. Design Center for Global Needs, San Francisco State University Department of Design and Industry, a national conference titled, "Universal Design Symposium". The National Teleconference on the ADA (”Opening All Doors”) for the American Institute of Architects, the International Conference of Building Officials and the Public Broadcasting System. (Partial List) PRODUCT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT: Division of Rail, California Department of Transportation: I consulted on the development of a new generation of passenger rail cars for in state use. I have consulted on the design of many products for the largest manufacturer of street furniture in the world and won an award for Excellence in Universal Design, in 1996. (Partial List) PUBLICATION DEVELOPMENT: "Site Inspection Checklist," 1990. A building accessibility assessment/code compliance manual, for the State of California. "Access California Bulletin," 1990. A newsletter providing up to date information on developments in disability related state and federal laws and regulations. "A Preservationist's Guide to the ADA," 1993. A technical discussion of the impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act on the preservation of historic structures.
