A longitudinal study of Harvard business school graduates found that the top 3% achievers in the corporate world had written plans and goals for themselves which they reviewed regularly. In contrast, 95%+ of career seekers have no clearly defined goals, no written personal plan and no effective training in career transition strategies. We have found through experience that you can achieve better results – and achieve them faster – by avoiding the following career transition potholes. Here is a brief explanation and an idea for how to improve in each area: • Lack of clearly state goals – The best question you can answer clearly when making a career change is “What do you want to do next?” Get clear and specific about your career transition goal(s) and what you want from others. Note: JLC offers career assessments and personalized mentoring that helps you define focused goals. • Counterproductive attitude – People working in a poor environment, shocked by job loss or stressed by a lengthy job search frequently develop attitude issues. These are reflected directly (your verbal and non-verbal communications) and indirectly (your lack of confidence, energy, etc.) . Eliminate contact with negative, discouraging people. Associate with positive, energetic people who are helpful and supportive. • Misunderstanding of personal impressions – It is difficult to impartially view your actions and almost impossible to define the impressions you make on people you meet. Weak or negative first impressions are counterproductive. Seek honest advice and constructive suggestions from people whose opinions you trust. Note: JLC offers training in communications skills, combined with constructive feedback that you will not get from others. • Lack of commitment to career search – Most career seekers can always find other demands that take away from time spent setting goals and taking direct action. Lack of action definitely delays results (and income). Get real with yourself. If you are not putting enough hours into your search then you lack commitment. Note: JLC offers a structure for caring, supportive accountability and provides positive motivational materials. • Failure to identify your target market and target employers – Most companies feels they have an excess supply of qualified candidates and resumes. This makes getting interviews more difficult. Develop a list of 50-100 desirable employers. Note: JLC offers support to pinpoint desirable employers and (for professional and executive career transition program clients) to leverage our extensive contact base, including 3700+ direct LinkedIn contacts. • Blending in with the herd – Companies are seeking standout, top-performing candidates. Appearing as a generalist or an average performer will retard your progress. Examine your resume and 60 second elevator speech. Practice it until you “have it down”, it does not sound rehearsed and you appear to be a top performer. Note: JLC offers our expertise in developing your unique person “brand” and honing your self-selling skills. • Leading with a resume – Most career changers have average, ho-hum resumes. Even a great resume can be a poor substitute for your in-person presentation. Don’t “cold call” with your resume. Note: JLC offers alternative strategies for gaining warm referrals and making solid personal connections with decision makers in targeted employers. • Dead-end networking – Most seekers have little formal networking training and fail to leverage their wealth of contacts. Sometimes they feel they are begging. Don’t beg. Ask for what you want politely and clearly. Note: JLC offers confidential advice that eliminates negative concerns and strategies that motivate contacts to help you. • Poor interview strategies – Being highly qualified is a potential door opener, but your next great career opportunity will be won or lost in the employer-driven job interview process.
