I have been involved with Talent Development and Coaching, for a couple of years now, almost always in an international setting (USA, Europe Asia). At that time I was a firm believer that training, mentoring or coaching was a face-to-face thing. Yet, through the continuity of my professional journey around the US, Europe and Asia, individuals and organizations I once serviced, started to request for distance support.
The first few individuals I worked with were people I had met in person at least once in the past, so a TRUST-BASED RELATIONSHIP was already established, since a lot of effort and time has been focused on developing it in the first place. But I realized with new and distant-based clients that the anonymity provided by the distance actually accelerated the establishment of trust, in the provider-client relationship. If no complete trust exist between the coach and the coachee, no coaching would be beneficial. What peers, friends and family cannot explore, FEARING TO HURT ONE’S “FEELINGS”, an unbiased coach, LOOKING AT THE PROBLEMATIC WITH AN OUTSIDE POINT OF VIEW AND A NON-JUDGMENTAL ATTITUDE, can. And this is where all the difference between an effective coaching and a poor one is made.
Having personally worked in some remote locations where telephone communications were difficult to be used or even considered as a coaching support tool, it naturally lead me to use instant messaging services such as msn messenger, gtalk and the likes, to provide coaching, mentoring and support services to a limited clients base. The advantages of these chatting tools, in regards to coaching, is the element of ANONYMITY, enabling to suppress some of the fears of being judged, the INTERACTIVITY between the coachee and the coach it allows, and the option of being able to go through a coaching session in a COMFORTABLE AND PRIVATE ENVIRONMENT such as home.
Due to my professional and academic background, I am a business coach. I have helped people with problematic such as GENERAL, HR AND CROSS-CULTURAL MANAGEMENT, CORPORATE DYNAMICS, CAREER COUNSELING, CULTURAL AWARENESS, SOUTH EAST & EAST ASIAN WORK CULTURE, INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION, ANGER MANAGEMENT IN THE WORK ENVIRONMENT and the likes.
Yet, a life full of travel, encounters with amazing people, but also entrepreneurial mistakes, a bad first marriage and an even worse divorce often lead to a PROFOUND REFLECTION ON YOURSELF AND MORE OVER ON LIFE IN GENERAL. One’s capacity to benefit from life’s lessons simply depends on how ready we are to accept your life’s, people’s but most importantly our own nature as individuals.
