Biofeedback is possibly the most accessible, yet under-utilized, treatment modality available in health care today. It is benign, non-toxic, non-invasive and relatively inexpensive. At its least it can facilitate changes as simple as helping chronic pain patients relax muscles that are constantly in pain and spasm; at its best it can enable those who have relinquished responsibility for participating in the maintenance of their wellbeing with the understanding and skills to again become active partners in recognizing and restoring a healthful homeostasis in their bodies.
Biofeedback (or applied psychophysiology) is the gentlest form of behavior modification therapy. It enables people, through the practice of relaxation and self-hypnotic techniques while connected to physiological monitoring devices, to consciously sense and influence the functioning of the basic systems in their bodies; especially (but not exclusively) the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. It has been successfully used as a primary treatment modality for chronic muscular tension and pain, hypertension, migraine, insomnia, anxiety and phobic reactions, menstrual distress, spastic colon and eliminative disorders, epilepsy, asthma and bruxism, among other conditions. It is also an effective adjunctive treatment in multi-disciplinary approaches where low physical self-awareness or heightened sympathetic autonomic arousal might be impeding the progress of more traditional therapies.
With biofeedback, many people have been able to overcome the fear and ignorance that has alienated them from their own bodies. By mastering such simple yet essential tasks as relaxing painfully tight muscles, lowering blood pressure, slowing the heartbeat or deepening breathing, they come to realize that they can do more than merely suffer the disability and discouragement of disease and dysfunction. They gain access to a new set of tools they they can continue to use to help themselves after formal treatment has ended, and often find they have embarked on an ongoing process of self-discovery and greater self-acceptance. Empowering patients to employ this innate ability to participate in maintaining their own wellbeing is one of the next major advances in health care.

Biofeedback is possibly the most accessible, yet under-utilized, treatment modality available in the health care world of today. It is benign, non-toxic, non-invasive and relatively inexpensive. At its least it can enable people to make changes as simple as helping chronic pain patients learn to relax groups of muscles that have been constantly in pain and spasm for many years; at its best it can enable those of us who have relinquished our responsibility for participating in the maintenance of our own wellbeing with the knowledge, understanding and skills to again become active partners in recognizing and restoring a healthful homeostasis in our bodies.
Biofeedback (which is also known as applied psychophysiology) is the gentlest form of the behavior modification therapies. It enables a wide range of people, through the practice of relaxation and self-hypnotic techniques while connected to physiological monitoring devices, to consciously sense and influence the functioning of the most basic biological systems in their bodies; especially (but not exclusively) the parasympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system. It has been successfully used as a primary treatment modality for relieving chronic muscular tension and its resulting pain, lowering high blood pressure, preventing migraine headaches, overcoming insomnia, anxiety and potentially crippling phobic reactions, reducing menstrual distress, spastic colon and eliminative disorders, controlling epilepsy and minimize nighttime tooth grinding, among many other conditions. It has also been found to be an effective adjunctive treatment in multi-disciplinary approaches where low physical self-awareness or h
