Haematemesis is itself a symptom and characterized by vomiting of blood which is mostly the colour of coffee grounds or bright red if it is fresh. This vomiting can be sudden and forceful may cause a tear in the food pipe. Sometimes, extensive loss of blood may lead to a significant drop in the blood pressure along with rapid pulse rate. This is a medical emergency.
Causes of hemetemesis and malena: Esophageal: reflux esophagitis,varices tumors
Stomach: ulcers, gastritis gastric varices, tumors
Duodenum: ulcers and duodenitis
Malena (black tarry stools): due to bleeding from mouth to anus , causes are same as above

20 years of experience in treating gadtrointestinal emergencies. . Trained in Gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy. Practicing in Mumbai. Have done around 5000 operations till date.
