MSW - Master of Social Work

My Expert Service

I became a part of this service with the hope that children's lives can be changed for the better through positive, proactive parenting.

I truly believe that we all possess the ingredients for successful parenting and every child has it in them to be their best self. It is our job as parents to hone our skills and guide them gently through that process.

I have a Masters in Social Work and have worked therapeutically with children of all ages and their families. I struggled with the challenges that child therapy presented in that children were not "fixable" because the problems they presented were simply symptoms and coping techniques for the things that were wrong at home. I shifted my career goals to effect change where I truly believed it would be more impactful: with the parents.

I've been teaching foster and adoptive parenting classes for over 6 years now. I've met so many exceptional people, willing to risk their own emotions to help children who've suffered horrendous abuses. As challenging as some of the behaviors of foster children can be, the skills needed to deal with them are very basic, as they are with parenting your own children. While some concepts for successful parenting are so fundamental and basic, we often overlook them when our own emotions and our own needs get in the way.

I have three children of my own - boys 8 and 5, and a baby girl. I'm not a perfect parent. Nobody can be. There will always be things beyond our control that influence a child's behavior and even when we do what we think is right at the time, with new information we discover that perhaps we were wrong. That's okay. To quote our pediatrician, who consoled me in a moment of desperation as I held my colicky infant:

"When you love your children, you will always do the right thing. You do what you think is right with the information you have at the time."

While I do not profess to have all of the answers, I have developed some core philosophies and techniques that help me be a better parent. These stem from my own childhood, my education, my commitment to understanding children's needs, and my experiences teaching literally hundreds of families over the last several years and hearing the amazing feedback they've presented me. They all possessed the knowledge and skills to be better parents and they were joyful to have some new perspectives on how to apply them.

By offering my services and sharing my ideas on parenting, I hope that many more families can experience the joy of watching their children grow into healthy, functional adults while still appreciating them for the children they are today.

Thanks for stopping by!
