My Expert Service

My approach is primarily cognitive behavioral with an emphasis on positive psychology. That means I strongly believe that how we think and how we act directly creates the quality of our lives; good or bad. I help people gain insight into how their past experiences resulted in old conclusions about themselves and the world around them. These old assumptions continue to influence their current thinking and behaviors, including how they parent their children. Parents often feel powerless and ineffective in managing or changing their children's behaviors. The solution lies in the fact that a few adjustments in the parent's behaviors can bring about big changes in the behavior of children. I most often use the techniques developed for parents by Russel Barkley ("The Defiant Child") and Jim Fay ("Love and Logic"). Once parents gain some freedom from their own scripts and unfinished issues that are influencing their parenting choices they can then begin to use the information and strategies provided. I enjoy empowering parents with the techniques and support to help them regain control of their families and feel better about themselves as parents.

Experience & Qualifications

I have worked with many parents and their families during my 20 years in practice. I have seen troubled families in various settings including three agency based mental health clinics, in my work as an on-site therapist for a juvenile facility and most recently in my private practice of four years. I have had training in many areas that impact families and children including attachment disorders, adoption, children and grief, abuse of children, ADHD/ADD, behavior management, Conduct Disorders, and Oppositional Disorders. I have had the opportunity to work with children who are dealing with anxiety, depression, ADHD/ADD, PTSD, Pediatric Bipolar Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, adjustment to divorce, grief issues and abuse. I have created and had oversight of groups for children dealing with divorce, adolescent substance abuse/delinquency and children coping with stress management, anger management and social skill development. I have assisted in creating behavior management programs for a 28 bed facility working with at-risk youth and been a consultant to their staff.
