Compassion, caring, empathy, a competent base of knowledge, ethics and integrity are the foundational attributes I feel that one needs to possess to be a good therapist. These fundamentals don't change if one is gay, lesbian or heterosexual, in a relationship, engaged, living together or married. A critical difference when dealing with homosexual clients often revolves around self-acceptance. Having others accept you when you don't accept yourself is unrealistic. That is always the first order of business in "ego dystonic" homosexuality.

Experience & Qualifications

I have worked with gays and lesbians successfully over the years, both with regard to "intra-psychic" issues and with regard to inter-personal relationships. This has been in family service agency settings, outpatient mental health centers, and even within the military population.
