During the final fourteen years of my professional career I was a "double judge." I served full time for fourteen years with Iowa Workforce Development hearing appeals of unemployment matters, which closely examined the entitlement of people out of work to unemployment benefits. This involved examining witnesses to determine the facts, and apply the law, to the situations of workers and employers. For nineteen years I was an alternate regular court judge, subsituting for the permanent judge as required, several weeks a year.
