I have been employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs since 1970.Prior to that affiliation, I worked in a medical-surgical department in the private sector for 2 years. In 1984, I coordinated the opening of an outpatient oncology department in a hospital setting. From 1988 to 1991, I worked as a Radiation Oncology Nurse Educator. In 1994 I became the Medical Oncology Nurse Coordinator in a VA outpatient clinic. My scope of practice includes clinical practice, coordination of oncology activities, consultation, patient education, administration, research, and professionalism. I have have provided educational inservices for UC Davis Cancer Center nurses, for VA oncology nurses at Mather, Sacramento, for oncology nurses at Travis air Force Base in Fairfield, CA, and for oncology office nurses in the private sector.I regularly participate in oncology seminars to update my oncology knowledge.I have my Master's in Nursing degree in education so I can apply the learning principles to successfully engage patients in the learning process. I have developed appropriate practices based on OSHA and ONS guidelines to identify patients at risk for specific complications of chemotherapy treatment. I implement strategies to manage these complications. I promote quality cancer care by providing patient and family oncology-related education, by being a strong patient advocate, by implementing continuous quality improvement, and by being a change agent in improving patient outcomes. I have been nationally certified as an oncology nurse since 1988 (I recertify every 4 years).
