Please Note
Online counseling is not appropriate for all kinds of problems. If you have suicidal thoughts, it's important that you seek help immediately. You are not alone. If you are located in the US, call
1-800-784-2433 or 911 and ask for help. If you are outside the US, look here to find the support hotline in your country and area.

Degrees

I am a Clinical Member of VAFT, the Victorian Association of Family Therapists (Victoria is the state I live in). I have a BA in Psychology from the University of Washington and a Postgraduate Diploma in Family Therapy from La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. I am certified in EMDR, a type of trauma therapy that is also very useful in many other types of issues. I have professional training in drug and alcohol addiction, gambling addiction, The Positive Parenting Program (both individual work and group work), working with violent/angry men, group facilitation, and Single Session Therapy.

My Expert Service

I am an American living in Australia and I am in private practice here providing counseling (spelled 'counselling' here) for adults, children/adolescents, and families. I have been counseling people since 1997 and have helped countless families and individuals. I believe in providing supportive and effective counseling in a safe and nurturing environment. I empower clients to identify problems with renewed clarity and shift any patterns that may be keeping them stuck in unhappy situations or feelings. I am non-judgemental, non-blaming, and highly respectful with all clients, am creative and dynamic in approach, and I use a variety of therapeutic interventions, strategies, and techniques.

I am careful to ensure clients are:

* Comfortable with the therapeutic work
* Informed about the purpose of various therapeutic interventions and given the choice as to whether they wish to use them
* Encouraged to give honest feedback about the work (I believe
that such feedback helps to make sure I am 'on the right track'
and that the work is indeed helping)
* Given important information about the issues they face, in the
form of handouts, literature, mapping of patterns, reference to
services, books/websites, etc.

There are many different counseling approaches and I understand it can be confusing to people. I use a variety of theoretical frameworks in my work, which include: systems theory, trauma theory, solution focused therapy, structural therapy, strategic therapy, narrative therapy, single session therapy, art therapy, and play therapy. I am happy to talk to you more about what these theories are and how they are used. I tailor my work to individual clients, couples, and families.

Experience & Qualifications

I am currently in private practice in Australia providing individual counselling (for adults and children/adolescents), Family Therapy, Single Session Therapy, phone counselling, and workshops on separation/divorce for parents and non-parents and on stress management for parents.

Prior to Therapy Works (my business name), I worked for several years as a Family Counsellor (both in-office and in-home) in government funded programs through Connections (Formally known as Uniting Care Connections) a not- for-profit agency. These programs included the Counselling Clinic (Croydon), Families First (Eastern Region), Family Residential Unit (Canterbury), and Family Services (Croydon and Blackburn). I developed and facilitated a therapeutic group for parents who were going through separation and divorce. I also
participated in setting up and running the Single Session Therapy Program through the Counselling Clinic and Family Services programs in Blackburn and Croydon.

My work history also includes working as a Counsellor for Parentline, The Greater Murray Access Line, and several gambling help lines across Australia. In the USA, I also
provided phone counselling for parents in Seattle for a similar service as Parentline.
