My Expert Service

Washington, D.C.-based writer/editor. I offer a full range of services from writing/researching/interviewing to substantive editing to copy editing to proofreading. Work on a full range of publication types, including newsletters, magazines, handbooks, proposals, brochures, catalogs, etc. Writing Assignment - You give me an project for which we discuss parameters, such as how long the finished piece is to be, what research is required, etc. I will start from scratch to deliver a completed work. Substantive Editing (aka "Line Editing") Assignment - Starting with a document that is already written but needing substantial work, I rewrite, correct, suggest, and query, as necessary. Copy Editing Assignment - Starting with a document that is already written and well organized, I make rewrites on the sentence level, for grammar, punctuation, and parallelism. However, I don't rewrite whole paragraphs or change the larger structure of the piece. Proofreading Assignment - Starting with a document that is almost ready to be published, I make only small changes, within sentences, for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I might query, if I saw places where larger changes might be made. To fine-tune my ideas for the final product, it is helpful to discuss the level of writing/editing needed before the process begins. I love collaborating in this way to manifest clients' visions for their work. You have the option of either specifying the level of editing desired up front, or allowing me to make suggestions after I view the material to be worked and we discuss the project.

Experience & Qualifications

Showing my experience in all aspects of writing and editing, my work is well organized and richly developed (with vivid images and cogent ideas), as well as brilliantly polished: I offer nothing less than crisp, clean prose that "sings." I have provided freelance writing, substantive editing, copy editing, and proofreading services for various organizations in and around D.C., including the Society for Human Resource Management, Associated General Contractors of America, American Red Cross, National Geographic, American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), the Teaching Company, Island Press, U.S. Pharmacopeia, and many others. Work on a full range of publication types, including newsletters, magazines, handbooks, proposals, brochures, catalogs, etc. Assignment lengths range from one day to several months. Published articles I have written include "Strong, Sane Decision-Making Amid Economic Turmoil" (for SHRM) "Should Leaders Apologize for Mistakes?" (for SHRM) "Aging Workforce Raises Special Safety Concerns" (for SHRM) "Video Games Facilitate Fire Safety" (for SHRM) "Manage Cultural Differences Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator" (for SHRM) "How to Build and Keep Workers' Trust in a Crisis" (for SHRM) For the Associated General Contractors' magazine, Constructor, I wrote cover stories on each year's incoming association president for five years in a row. I also wrote many other feature stories, profiling association chapter activities and member accomplishments.
