Degrees

B.S., M.A., Ph.D., M.S. As a board certified pain doctor and a University of Michigan graduate, I am a member of the American Academy of Pain Management and a Diplomate of the American College of Forensic Medicine. I was originally educated as a Medical and Health Psychologist with specialty in behavioral medicine and coping with chronic medical illness and injury. Internship and "Residency" was at a V.A. medical center with rotation experience in orthopedic rehabilitation, chronic pain, cardiology, gastroenterology, and brain injury. Though I'd taken dozens of classes in biology, chemistry, anatomy, and physiology, over time, my clinical passion for alleviating physical pain blossomed and I obtained a Master's of Science with emphasis in the medical basis of orthopedic, neurologic, and myofascial pain.

My Expert Service

I publish a free, biweekly newsletter called "Advances in Medicine" (AIM) that you can sign up for at MyPainReliefDoc.com. For the past 20 years, my clinical career has been dedicated to decreasing the pain and improving life quality of people suffering from painful medical conditions. More narrowly, my specific expertise is in maximizing the effectiveness of medical treatment of orthopedic, neurologic, and myofascial pain. Though I have treated thousands of patients in all medical specialites, now I concentrate on conditions like neck or back pain, headache, fibromyalgia, neuropathies, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and colitis. I will evaluate the reasonableness of your various diagnoses and treatment plan. I will educate you in detail about the five basic treatments for pain including surgery, injections, medications, physical therapies, and alternative modalities. If you are a surgical candidate, I can help you make a truly informed decision about your specific surgery which your surgeon will not. I can explain the numerous types of injections that can provide permanent or short term pain relief. I can teach you the pros, cons, and mechanism of action of the various classes of pain medications including simple analgesics, narcotics, anti-inflammatories, anti-convulsants, muscle relaxants, triptans, and serotonin mediators. I can help you develop a plan to communicate more effectively with your doctors and maximize the quality of your medical treatment. Would you believe they actually work for you? I will assess your lifestyle and the behavioral factors like posture and gait that may be triggering increases in your pain. I will then assist you in developing a written plan for better self management of pain. You will be understood, encouraged, and armed with information to take AIM against pain.

Experience & Qualifications

In private practice since 1983, I have consulted to thousands of surgeons, specialists, and primary care physicians. I have worked with dozens of pain clinics and founded or co-founded a half dozen pain clinics in Los Angeles and Orange County. I have personally conducted over 40,000 appointments with pain patients and their families. I assess surgical candidacy, make medication recommendations, clear patients for narcotics, evaluate appropriateness of physical therapy and other ancillary modalities, assess candidacy for neuromuscular re-education, and educate patients about all aspects of medical diagnosis, treatment, and management. As the owner of P.A.C.E., Inc., I have supervised my junior colleagues in the provision of over 100,000 patient visits. I have developed and overseen a post doctoral training program in rehabilitation and pain management since 1989. I maintain an active, hospital based practice. Treating medical patients with painful orthopedic, neurologic, or myofascial pain is not something providers should "dabble" in. It should not be something that they do...too. You don't want a doctor that also treats pain any more than you want a surgeon who does surgery as a sideline to his real passion. Past, present, and future, my career is committed to helping alleviate physical pain and asociated suffering. I am strongly qualified by decades of education, training, and experience to work with the continuum of medical pain causes from the purely physical (ex: crushed nerve) to the purely psychological (ex: stress based bleeding ulcers) and everything in-between. I am excited to have the opportunity to support and educate internet users who suffer the ravages of physical pain. To get the most out of your consultation with me, I encourage you to consider faxing me, the day before your appointment, copies of recent, relevant medical consultations and diagnostic testing, with your name and identifying info blacked out. My fax is (949) 509-1975. I am delighted to blend my particular expertise with medical pain into the family of Kasamba providers. Welcome!
