My Expert Service

I assess work based on the employment of the elements of form and the principles of design, and how well they support the content, or meaning, of the work. My critique proceeds from a genuine interest in helping artists discover untried, unfamiliar or underdeveloped methods of making their works communicate more effectively. I don't say something like: "I like this part of your painting", or, "I don't like that color". Instead, I say something like: "This area really speaks to me, it has a lot of energy. Perhaps you could make this other area more interesting too, by adding a stronger hue"...Or, "If these edges were softened at these points, you could make the form more believable..."
I make considered suggestions on how to 1) enhance or eliminate certain lines, or sharpen or soften edges at just the right places, 2) how to adjust shapes for best effect, 3) how to mix colors--which colors, tools and materials to use--for greatest impact, 4) how to adjust the lightness and darkness of colors so that they occupy a sensible place in pictorial space, 5) how to effect texture, so that it works contextually with all the other elements, and 6) how to suggest space and form via the intelligent handling of these elements. I also determine if an artwork incorporates the following: harmony, variety, balance, proportion, dominance, movement and economy, and work with artists on ways to correct any possible insufficiencies.
