Experience & Qualifications

Life and Business are largely about relationships. You had, and hopefully have, relationships with your parents. Perhaps you have a relationship with a significant other. You have a relationship with yourself. How do you see yourself? How do you feel about yourself? How do you see yourself in the future? That is a kind of relationship; the relationship between your present self and your future self. What of your future self, your future life? Will it just be an accident? Or will it be something you make happen? In a business there are relationships among the founders, people supplying capital to the business, people working for the business, people with whom the business does business, and others. One advantage a business has is that the relationships can be carefully explained in writings to which all agree and which will be enforced by the courts. Life’s relationships are not generally so clear cut, but understandings can be reached. I have spent the last 30 years helping entrepreneurs start and run businesses. At some point I decided I needed to understand more about the psychology of my clients if I was to serve them better. I think I thought of their psychology because of my having meditated since I was fifteen; another very useful tool, for psychology and for business. Going to school nights and weekends, I obtained a Masters in Social Work degree. It has made me a much better lawyer. Law school taught me how to prove a proposition. Social work school taught me how to listen. Meditation taught me how to listen to myself listening. Sometimes, in making a business deal, assumptions about what the other side wants can be proven wrong. Knowing what the other guy really wants can make a big difference. In life, as in business, mistaken assumptions lead to misunderstandings, and listening can often be of great help. Listening, and the ability to see your own assumptions, are skills that can be taught and learned. Of course, unresolved tensions in your personal life undercut your ability to make the best business decisions. Better understanding the dynamics of the relationships in your personal life will help resolve some of the tensions and enable you to make better business decisions, be a better businessperson. Unresolved tensions in contracts lead to litigation. I believe in win-win scenarios and write agreements that motivate all interest groups to strive for the greatest success of the business. I can help you overcome fear, and take the leap, do the thing, you always wanted to do, or understand why you decide to stay where you are. If it can make money I will tell you. I will also tell you if it will not. Or maybe it has nothing to do with money. I can help you take your business from conception, to operation and on to expansion, whatever you desire. If you want, I can be with you all the way through the IPO process. If you call and then hire me to produce documents for you, you will have the same rate as your phone rate.
