My Expert Service

Ronnie Ling comes from an advertising family in Shanghai. His Father Mr. C. P. Ling, was the pioneer of advertising in China setting up the first modern advertising agency with headquarters in Shanghai. It was 1926. And September 1st was the official birthday of China Commercial Advertising Agency.

The Ling family came to Hong Kong in April 1949, just one month before China was liberated by the Communist forces. On October 1, 1949, China declared the founding of the People's Republic of China with her Capital in Beijing.

Ronnie and his second elder brother William, started the family agency China Commercial Advertising Agency.

The two major clients were Colgate Palmolive Company and Civil Air Transport, the flag carrier of the Nationalist Chinese government in Taiwan. The airline was founded by General Claire L. Chennault of flying tigers' fame during world war II but soon was quickly and quietly taken over by a Washington D.C. company.

Some of the other clients were Nestle Products (HK) Ltd., starting with Nestle Chocolate and subsequently followed by all products. Nestle, like Colgate, treated Hong Kong as a special case in that they used only one agency not adhering to the generally two agency policy.

The Ling brothers were approached by New York based agency McCann Erickson who wanted to buy China Commercial. William and Ronnie were much too young to sell out so an agreement was reached to form a fifty fifty joint venture, following the systems of McCann Erickson under the management of the Lings. Ling McCann Erickson Ltd. was born.

Strong in finance, William took the Chair and controlled the finance and administration, while Ronnie with his flare for the "persuasion" business, ran the professional services: creative, media and account service.

Soon most of the large multinational advertising agencies all came in and competition was heavy. Under the professional management of Ronnie Ling, the agency gained the following major accounts: Coca-Cola Company, British American Tobacco Co., (HK) Ltd. Kodak (Far East) Ltd. Remy Martin Cognac plus Nestle, Colgate who are already clients.

CHINA-

China, after ten excruciating years of cultural revolution and four following years of backlash and purge, hesitatingly opened her door. At that time, Nestle were entering the China market and in those early days, Hong Kong Chinese don't speak Mandarin or putonghua. Ronnie's mother tongue is Shanghainese, a derivative of Mandarin, naturally speaks Mandarin and also Cantonese that is the dialect of Guangdong province and spoken in Hong Kong.

Nestle invited Ronnie to be their Advertising Consultant for The People's Republic of China. He served for five years until Nestle established their China company with head office in Beijing.

Last but not least his China experience included working with British American Tobacco Company and Remy Martin.
