What is the formula for success in Russia?
Everything depends on interpersonal relationships and understanding Russian culture.
So if you are an individual or company that is considering doing business in Russia, the first step is setting proper expectations. Russians are very arrogant and do not take easily to foreigners. They think they do everything better, and do not need or already have what you are selling. If you are a foreigner trying to sell goods and services directly to Russians, you might as well pack your bags and go home. The key is learning how to work with Russians, rather than relying on a good product.
The old phrase "It is not what you know, but who you know" refers to ALL business in Russia.
Foreigners entering the Russian market must also be aware of the corruption that goes on within both private and government sectors. The harsh reality of it is that all organizations, foreign and domestic catalyze the corruption. Either directly or through third parties. Unfortunately corruption is embedded in Russian culture, because people think in terms of themselves, rather than an organization as a whole. But you must be careful in your dealings, because law enforcers are always looking to get their piece of the pie. This is why foreign companies often hire third party organizations to handle their dealings with bureaucrats and get around government regulations.
Everyone in Russia is looking to get their cut, whether it is a police officer or a school teacher. This is understood when most salaries are $800 a month, and at the same time government bureaucrats are looting the country of billions.
Bending the rules in Russia is the name of the game, but must be done morally.
This might sound ironic, but Russia in general is one large oxymoron.
To sum it up: It is not what you sell, but who you sell it with or to.
